On Friday, Air India reported that all passengers on its Delhi to San Francisco flight are safe after their plane was diverted to Russia due to a technical glitch. Flight AI183 made an emergency landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Russia after the cockpit crew noticed a potential issue in the cargo hold area.
The flight, which had 225 passengers and 19 crew members onboard, landed safely, and everyone was taken to the terminal building for further assistance. Since Air India doesn’t have its own staff at Krasnoyarsk International Airport, the airline is arranging for third-party support to help the passengers.
“Because we don't have our own staff at KJA, we're getting third-party support to provide all necessary assistance to passengers,” the airline said in a statement. Air India is also coordinating with government agencies and regulatory authorities to arrange a ferry flight that will take the passengers to San Francisco as soon as possible.
“All of us at Air India are concerned about the passengers and staff. We're doing everything we can to get the ferry flight operational as soon as possible, ensuring everyone's health, safety, and security while they wait. We’ll share updates as soon as we have them,” the statement added.
This incident brings to mind a similar situation last year when another Air India flight on the same route had to divert to Magadan, a remote town in Russia, due to technical problems. That Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft had 216 passengers and 16 crew members onboard. Those passengers had to stay in a makeshift accommodation in a school for two days until a replacement flight from Mumbai arrived with food and essentials and then flew them to San Francisco.
Air India is working hard to ensure the comfort and safety of its passengers during this unexpected delay. The airline is committed to resolving the situation as quickly and smoothly as possible.
