In a tragic incident on Monday, four members of the Myanmar security services, including a high-ranking brigadier-general, lost their lives in a shocking sniper attack as their helicopter prepared to land. The devastating assault unfolded near the eastern Thingannyinaung town, close to the Thai border. Brigadier General Aye Min Naung, along with his personal security officer and two pilots, fell victim to the sniper assault that ultimately claimed the life of the brigadier-general.
The details of the incident were shared by a military source with AFP, revealing that the helicopter's landing preparations were met with sniper fire, resulting in the helicopter lying on its side in a field. Local media published images portraying the aftermath of the incident.
The security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared that two other servicemen on the helicopter survived the attack. However, further details about their survival were not disclosed.
The source refrained from specifying the number of snipers involved or attributing blame for the shooting. The region around Myawaddy has been a hotspot for clashes between the junta and ethnic minority fighters, along with allied "People’s Defence Force" groups in recent months.
This tragic event marks the latest casualty among high-ranking officers on the frontlines as the junta continues to battle opponents of its coup across various regions. In a similar incident last November, a brigadier-general of a light infantry battalion lost his life in Monekoe near the China border due to a bomb dropped from a drone during clashes.
Furthermore, six brigadier generals are currently in custody for surrendering with over 2,000 troops to an alliance of ethnic minority fighters in the neighboring Kokang region. In another November incident, a light fighter jet crashed in the east of the country amidst ongoing fighting, with anti-coup forces claiming responsibility for shooting it down. However, the junta attributed the crash to engine failure.
The persistent conflict in Myanmar since the 2021 military coup has led to a complex situation with multiple armed ethnic groups actively opposing the junta on various fronts. The recent tragedy involving the Myanmar security services highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by those involved in the conflict.
