In a groundbreaking accomplishment, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and a collaborative Boeing-led industry team have achieved a significant milestone in national security. They successfully intercepted an intermediate-range ballistic missile in space during the latest Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system test, demonstrating the capabilities of the system's Capability Increment 6B configuration.

Strategically deployed in military bases across Alaska and California, the GMD system boasts 44 interceptors as of 2018, forming a sophisticated network that spans 15 time zones. Utilizing cutting-edge sensors on land, at sea, and in orbit, the system ensures comprehensive coverage against potential ballistic missile threats to the U.S. homeland.

Following a crucial missile defense review in 2019, the U.S. MDA, in collaboration with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, has overseen the deployment of an additional 20 ground-based interceptors in Alaska, further fortifying the GMD system.

Debbie Barnett, Vice President of Strategic Missile & Defense Systems, emphasized the significance of the successful test, stating, "This achievement opens up the window of opportunity to intercept threats to our homeland. We are dedicated to continuously enhancing the GMD system’s capability to meet the rapidly evolving missile defense needs of our nation."

During the test, a GMD interceptor released the kinetic-force Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) during the rocket booster’s second stage, marking a critical phase in its three-stage flight sequence. Launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the interceptor successfully intercepted a threat-representative target launched from the Broad Ocean Area.

Manufactured by Raytheon with subcontractor Aerojet, the EKV is a key component of the U.S. Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, an integral part of the National Missile Defense system. Boosted to an intercept trajectory by a missile, the EKV autonomously separates and collides with incoming warheads, showcasing unparalleled precision.

The Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI) missile serves as the launch vehicle for the GMD system, facilitating the EKV's interception mission. Boeing, the lead system integrator since the program's inception in 1998, has played a pivotal role in the development, testing, operations, and sustainment of the system.
