In a groundbreaking decision, South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has officially selected Embraer’s C-390 Millennium in the Large Transport Aircraft (LTA) II public tender. This decision is a significant achievement in military aviation, as the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) becomes the C-390 Millennium's inaugural customer in Asia.
Contract Details and Customization:
The contract with Embraer includes an undisclosed number of C-390 Millennium aircraft, specially configured to meet the unique requirements of the ROKAF. The agreement also covers a range of services and support, including training, ground support equipment, and spare parts. The value of the contract will be included in Embraer’s backlog in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Local Collaboration and Offset Package:
Embraer is emphasizing local collaboration, with plans for Korean partner companies to locally manufacture a significant amount of C-390 Millennium parts. Additionally, a local Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) provider will be developed, contributing to the growth of South Korea's aerospace and defense industries.
Bosco da Costa Jr, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, expressed enthusiasm for the new chapter in Brazil-South Korea relations and the commitment to expanding capabilities in aerospace and defense.
Global Recognition and Operational Excellence:
South Korea joins a select group as the seventh nation to choose the C-390 Millennium, following Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The C-390 Millennium, known for its multi-mission capability, reliability, and interoperability, has been reshaping military airlift capabilities globally.
Operational Success:
Since its operational debut with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019 and recently with the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, the C-390 Millennium has demonstrated exceptional capacity, reliability, and performance. With over 10,800 flight hours, an operational availability of around 80%, and mission completion rates above 99%, it has proven its productivity.
Versatility in Action:
The C-390 Millennium, with a payload of 26 tons, surpasses other medium-sized military transport aircraft. With a top speed of 470 knots, it can perform various missions such as cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian operations. Its adaptability extends to operating on temporary or unpaved runways.
Aerial Refueling Capabilities:
Configured with air-to-air refueling equipment and designated as the KC-390, this aircraft has demonstrated proficiency in aerial refueling, serving as both a tanker and a receiver.
Embraer's Impact:
Embraer, a global aerospace company founded in 1969, has delivered over 8,000 aircraft. It is a leading manufacturer of commercial jets up to 150 seats and a significant exporter of high-value goods in Brazil, maintaining a global presence.
South Korea's selection of Embraer’s C-390 Millennium is a strategic move for its defense forces, marking a milestone in military aviation. As this partnership unfolds, the C-390 Millennium is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing South Korea's military capabilities and fostering collaboration in aerospace and defense industries.
