In a significant development for Switzerland's defense capabilities, the Swiss Federal Armaments Office (Armasuisse) has given its official nod to prime contractor GDELS-Mowag to commence the series production of the cutting-edge 12cm (120mm) Mortar 16. This approval marks a crucial milestone in bolstering the nation's military strength.
The 12cm Mortar 16, set to be manufactured in eastern Switzerland, represents a state-of-the-art indirect fire support system that will fill a critical gap in the army's capabilities. With 48 mortar systems slated for production and deliveries expected to commence in 2025, Switzerland is gearing up for a significant enhancement in its defense infrastructure.
At the forefront of this defense initiative is the Piranha IV 8×8 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, which will serve as the carrier vehicle for the 12cm Mortar 16. Developed by GDELS-Mowag, the Piranha IV boasts advanced features, including standard armor providing all-round 14.5mm AP protection and the ability to offer full crew protection against explosive AT mines.
Working in tandem with the Piranha IV is the Cobra mortar gun from RUAG AG, designed to be the primary weapon system. The COBRA is a high-tech mortar system that stands out for its versatility, easily integrating into both tracked and wheeled vehicles. Users can undergo quick and efficient training to operate the system at a high standard, thanks to its user-friendly design.
The funding for the procurement of the 12cm Mortar 16 is divided into two tranches, each approved by the Swiss Parliament. The first tranche, allocated in 2016, provided 404 million francs for 32 mortar systems, carrier vehicles, and associated equipment. The second tranche, approved in 2022, added an additional 175 million francs for an extra 12 mortar systems, emphasizing the government's commitment to enhancing the nation's defense capabilities.
The decision to move into full-scale production comes on the heels of the successful completion of extensive testing of the 12cm Mortar 16 prototype, developed between 2017 and 2019. The procurement program, part of the 2022 armaments initiative, reflects the Swiss Federal Parliament's dedication to staying at the forefront of defense technology.
Looking ahead, the delivery of the first tranche is expected between 2024 and 2025, with additional systems slated for delivery from 2026. The contract also encompasses protected trucks for ammunition resupply and operational support, further fortifying Switzerland's military readiness.
The Swiss Federal Armaments Office's approval signals a pivotal moment for the nation's defense landscape. With GDELS-Mowag taking the lead in the production of the 12cm Mortar 16, Switzerland is poised to strengthen its position in defense manufacturing, ensuring a robust and technologically advanced military infrastructure for the future.
