In a significant seven-week period, the European Defence Agency (EDA) oversaw the ninth Helicopter Tactics Instructors Course (HTIC) at Sintra Airbase No1 in Portugal and Pápa Air Base in Hungary, signifying the conclusion of an era under EDA's supervision. This course, notable for its two-week classroom and simulator phases, culminated in live flying exercises and challenging missions during a three-week deployment to Pápa Air Base. As the HTIC era under EDA's management concluded, the program transitions to the Multinational Helicopter Training Centre (MHTC) in Portugal, marking a historic milestone in training excellence.
Meticulously structured, the HTIC encompassed a comprehensive training approach. The initial classroom phase at Sintra Airbase No1 laid the foundation, followed by an immersive two-week simulator phase. After a crucial week of recovery and aircraft transfer, participants engaged in live exercises and missions during an intensive three-week deployment at Pápa Air Base, Hungary.
Throughout the course, a collaborative effort unfolded, with staff instructors from Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, and Sweden receiving specialized support from Inzpire Ltd. Units of the Czech Alca Jets and the Hungarian Gripens played a crucial role, providing fixed-wing support and acting as threats during the training. Additionally, Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Slovenia contributed Electronic Warfare (EW) assets and ground troops.
The impact of the HTIC is evident in the 15 Bronze, six Silver, and four Gold qualifications awarded during the graduation ceremony. These achievements not only contribute significantly to the international cadre of Helicopter Tactics Instructors (HTI) but also mark an enhancement in national capabilities.
This year's HTIC, the final edition under EDA's management, stands as a testament to its success, having achieved a high state of maturity and gained international recognition. The program has successfully cultivated a growing cadre of HTIs, setting the stage for a seamless transition to the Multinational Helicopter Training Centre (MHTC) by the end of 2023.
As the HTIC evolves and transitions to a new phase, this marks a milestone in training excellence, showcasing the dedication, collaboration, and achievements that have defined EDA's management of this crucial program. The smooth transition to MHTC underscores a commitment to maintaining and advancing the high standards set by EDA in helicopter tactics instruction.
