Indian Defence Forces to Procure 97 'Made-in-India' Drones for Border Surveillance. In a significant development, the Indian Defence forces have announced plans to acquire 97 indigenous drones for surveillance purposes along the borders with China and Pakistan. This decision comes after the recent procurement of 31 Predator drones from the United States, as India continues its efforts to bolster its defense capabilities under the 'Make-in-India' project.
Government sources revealed that a comprehensive scientific study, conducted jointly by the defense forces, determined the need for 97 drones to meet the Medium Altitude Long Endurance requirements. These drones will play a crucial role in monitoring both land and sea activities in the region.
The Indian Air Force will be leading the procurement process, which is estimated to be worth over Rs 10,000 crore. They are set to receive the highest number of these unmanned aerial vehicles, equipped with the ability to fly for nearly 30 consecutive hours. This acquisition will complement the existing fleet of 46 Heron UAVs, which have been in service across the three branches of the armed forces.
To further enhance their capabilities, the drones currently in service will undergo upgrades by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in collaboration with the original equipment manufacturers. This upgrade initiative aligns with the 'Make-in-India' initiative, emphasizing the utilization of over 60 percent Indian content in the manufacturing process.
Notably, India's recent decision to acquire the 31 Predator drones, falling under the High Altitude Long Endurance category, will significantly contribute to the surveillance of vast areas of national interest.
The acquisition of 97 'Made-in-India' drones marks a major milestone in strengthening India's national security. With enhanced surveillance capabilities along the China and Pakistan borders, these drones are expected to be a game-changer in safeguarding the country's territorial integrity and strategic interests.
